Dr. Antunes graduated from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Along with her medical training, she did research investigating pathways involved in pain signaling. She later worked as a post-graduate associate at the Department of Comparative Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine investigating pathways involved in appetite control. Subsequently, she completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Einstein Medical Center where she was later appointed as Chief Resident. She received multiple teaching awards and was praised by her professionalism and clinical skills. She then completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where she received additional training in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Neurogastroenterology under supervision of nationally and internationally recognized mentors. She has done research investigating neuronal mechanisms contributing to GI pathologies and has an interested in motility disorders affecting general population as well as patients with chronic intestinal inflammation.  She has received several awards including multiple teaching and research awards, the outstanding graduating resident award, the Professionalism Award from the American College of Physicians (ACP) Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter. She was also nominated for the Distinguished Teaching Society of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM), a prestigious teaching award given by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  She has written multiple research articles and book chapters and is an active member of GI societies. She is board certified in Internal Medicine.
