Research Summary

The principal focus of my research laboratory is to understand the innate immune responses to infectious agents, including adenovirus, influenza virus, and bacterial pathogens such as Bacillus anthracis, at cellular and molecular levels. Beginning in 2002, we developed a human lung organ culture model in order to determine how pathogens stimulate, and sometimes evade, the immune response, and also how the human host attempts to respond to the pathogen. We use primary lung cells and organ culture models to explore host-pathogen interactions with regards to adenovirus, influenza, and B. anthracis and the effect of cigarette smoke exposure on host immune responses.

Currently my laboratory is working on the following research projects:

Determining mechanisms whereby cigarette smoke impairs antiviral innate responses and increases morbidity and mortality during influenza infections

Determining mechanisms of escape for the Bacillus anthracis from the human lung alveolar space during inhalational anthrax.

Determining mechanisms of enhanced pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 through alterations in the antiviral innate immune responses in the lung.
