Scholarly Activity

A variety of continuing education opportunities are provided to residents, including state and national conference attendance.  Resident engagement in scholarly activity is also strongly supported by the department.
- Residents attend a minimum of one designated regional or national conference each PGY year
- Full travel costs are provided for any resident presenting original research at a regional or national conference
- All publication and presentation costs for resident research are provided


 

Events for Residents

Residents, faculty, and staff of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery work together as a family.  This mindset enables residents to experience firsthand the personal and professional bonds built on compassion, respect, and integrity that are forged within and outside of the workplace.  Throughout the year, the department hosts numerous social events to show our sincere appreciation for the efforts of our residents and faculty, and the families who support them at home.

Paid Time Off and Leave

Residents are entitled to three types of paid leave, as described below.
- Annual Leave (15 days per academic year)
          This includes vacations and personal time off.
- Sick Leave (15 days per academic year)
          This includes leave due to personal or family illness, injury, or medical need.
- Educational Leave (5 days per academic year)
          This includes leave to attend regional, national, specialty, or subspecialty meetings of the resident's choosing.


Family Leave - Federal Guidelines

Federal law mandates that, after one year of University employment, qualified employees may take up to 12 weeks of leave (available paid leave and then unpaid leave) during any 12-month period for (1) the birth and care of a newborn child; (2) the placement of a child for adoption or foster care and to care for the newly placed child; (3) the care of the employee’s spouse, son, daughter, or parent with a serious health condition; and (4) the employee’s own serious health condition. The university will continue to pay the cost of the university provided insurance coverage for employees for the 12 weeks of FMLA protected leave. The employee will continue to be responsible for payment of premiums for any elective coverage. It is the employee’s responsibility to contact the campus Benefits office to determine premium payment requirements.

 

Maternity/Paternity Leave

Available sick leave, annual leave, or leave without pay may be used in accordance with the Family Leave Act guidelines described above.
 

Resident Family Leave Policy

As the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery requires that each resident receive at least 46 weeks of full time orthopedic education per year, periods of family leave may extend the length of the residency training needed to meet board requirements.
