Fellowship Research

Head & Neck Oncologic Surgery Fellowship Research Program

The primary goal of the Head & Neck Fellowship Research Program is to ensure that the fellow has a thorough understanding of the discipline of research. The Program will give each fellow the opportunity to expand his or her current knowledge of research design, analysis, and the scientific method. The research experience will prepare the fellow for a position in academic medicine.

Administration

The Program is administered by the Program Director and implemented by the Research Program Coordinator. The departmental faculty must approve each research proposal, allocate block time for completion of the research project, and ensure that adequate financial resources are available to support the endeavors of each fellow.

The Program is organized in three levels:

  • Level I - Preparation of the Research Proposal: In Level I, the fellow participates in a series of four workshops to aid in selection of a research topic, and to introduce the basics of research design, methods, statistics, and grant applications. These are designed to aid the process of writing a formal research proposal.
  • Level II - Collection and Analysis of Data: Depending upon the nature of the project, the fellow will be given a 4-6 month block of time to devote to data collection during the third semester of the fellowship.
  • Level III - Presentation of Results: During the last semester of the fellowship, the fellow is required to present the research results at a national meeting, as well as submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.

The Research Proposal - The research proposal will consist of at least the following components:

  • Title page with fellow's and mentor's name
  • Specific Aims
  • Background and Significance
  • Preliminary Studies
  • Research Design and Methods
  • Literature Cited
  • Budget
  • Budget Justification
  • Resources and Environment
  • IRB or Animal Use Approvals
