Central Sensitization and Visceral Processing

A common observation in patients is that patients with irritable bowel syndrome also have a higher prevalence of urinary dysfunctions. Very little information exists to explain how the disease of one visceral organ can influence the function and pain sensitivity of another visceral organization.

A research program is being developed in collaboration with Dr. Hamid Akbarali, Dr. Beverley Greenwood-Van Meerveld and Dr. Ricardo Saban to study the underlying mechanisms that may explain the cross sensitization. This team of investigators will use molecular, cellular and integrative techniques to address the questions resulting from clinical observations.
