Psychological First Aid (PFA)

Psychological First Aid (PFA) was developed in collaboration with the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCTSN) and the National Center for PTSD and has been disseminated widely since Hurricane Katrina.

Psychological First Aid is an evidence-informed approach for assisting children, adolescents, adults, and families in the aftermath of disaster and terrorism. It is designed for providers to give practical assistance to meet immediate needs and concerns, reduce distress, and foster adaptive coping. PFA is appropriate for use by licensed mental health care providers and will be adapted for schools, medical emergency responders, volunteer responder organizations, and other groups.
