Does OU have any fellowships?
OU has two ACGME accredited fellowships: pediatric surgery and plastic & reconstructive surgery. Residents work closely with these fellows while rotating on their services. These fellowships are present due to the robust caseload and complexity which allows residents to play an active role in the operating room.
Do I have to pay for parking?
No! Parking is complimentary and includes multiple parking options at all training facilities. These options include outdoor and covered parking for no additional charge.
What are the food options at OU Medical Center?
OU has multiple dining options. There are two cafeterias present at OU Medical Center and Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. Residents receive quarterly funds which are redeemable at these two locations. Both hospitals also have specialty dining options including Dunkin' Donuts, Bee Healthy Café, Starbucks Coffee, Healthy Hearth, and Subway. Complimentary breakfast and lunch are provided in the surgeon’s lounge at OU Medical Center, Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, and Comanche County Memorial Hospital. OU Medical Center – Edmond allows residents full and complimentary access to physician’s lounge snacks and all cafeteria food.
Are all buildings walking accessible?
Yes! From the time that you park in the parking garage, all hospitals on the OU Health Science Center are accessible through a climate-controlled, covered walkway system. Of course, walking to OU-Edmond and Comanche County Memorial Hospital would be quite the hike!
How many residents do you take per year?
OU has 6 ACGME accredited general surgery residency positions per year. Some years, OU accepts up to 6 preliminary residents.
Are residents required to do research?
Research is encouraged, but not required! OU does, however, have plenty of research opportunities for those that are interested. Clinical research projects are continually ongoing from the vast majority of our faculty. We also have two attending surgeons who have NIH funded, basic science laboratories: Dr. Hunter and Dr. Morris. More information about their labs and research projects can be found here.
How does OU support resident wellness?
OU has several programs that support resident wellness. There are two free gyms available to all residents on campus. The O'DON Gym is in the O’Donohue Building (1122 NE 13th) and the NGRY Fitness Center is in Nicholson Tower (940 NE 13th). Resident Council hosts events and social activities for all residency programs. For residents working overnight shifts, there are fully furnished on-call rooms with a computer, phone, and TV’s. There are countless free events taking place around campus year-round; just check your email for details!
How often will I have to be in clinic?
Outpatient clinic is an integral part of surgery education. Typically, there is at least one-half day per week of clinic experience on each rotation. Clinics take place at the Presbyterian Physician Office Building, Stephenson Cancer Center, and OU Physicians buildings.
How does overnight call work?
Our program utilizes the “night float” system for all rotations at OU Medical Center. There is a night team that works from 6:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. during the week and separate 24hr weekend coverage by a designated call team pooled from other OU medical center rotations. Nighttime coverage at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital and OU – Edmond are not included in the night float system and these shifts are covered by those rotating on that particular service.
