Teresa Shavney, MD

Assistant Professor of Surgery

Dr. Teresa Shavney is an Associate Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Oklahoma. As the first female general surgeon in Oklahoma City and for other general surgery procedures, Dr. Shavney has been diagnosing and treating breast cancer for over 30 years. While new to the faculty, she has deep seeded roots in the University. She received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from The University of Oklahoma and went on to graduate from The University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. She completed her residency at The University of Oklahoma’s Health Science Center, where she received the Lloyd Rader Excellence Award.

Before joining the staff at OU, Dr. Shavney spent most of her career in private practice where she served as Chief of Surgery at several large area hospitals in Oklahoma City. During that time, she also served as President of the County Medical Society. As well as serving on multiple medical boards that helped further her in both patient care and physician knowledge. Her medical work also earned her Chickasaw Nation’s esteemed Dynamic Woman of the Year Award in 2009, something she is particularly proud of as a member of the Chickasaw Nation herself.

Dr. Shavney’s extensive experience has helped her develop unparalleled skills in patient care. This includes helping patients get better, helping them best understand their diagnoses, and making them feel a part of the process. As important as the private practice was to her career, joining the staff at OU has provided her with the important opportunity to not only help a wider range of patients but to help teach the young surgical residents of the Health Science Center to hone their skills and how to treat patients as a whole.
