Anesthesiology Residency

The University of Oklahoma, Department of Anesthesiology offers a ABA and ACGME accredited residency program consisting of a comprehensive continuum of education and experience in Anesthesiology from the clinical base year (PGY-1) to the CA-3 year (PGY-4) and beyond.

We also have CA-4 year (PGY-5) fellowship programs available: Pain Medicine Fellowship and Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship.

Anesthesiologists are involved in all areas of the medical care of surgical, obstetric, and critically ill patients. Outside the operating room, anesthesiologists are involved in preoperative assessment, perioperative pain management, Non-Operative Room Anesthesia and intensive care medicine. Therefore, the training of future anesthesiologists is both comprehensive and experiential. In the department of Anesthesiology, we provide our highly qualified residents a state-of-the-art training continuum that will not only produce skilled clinicians but scholars able to assimilate the ever changing field of medical science into their practice.

The residency experience is only an initial segment on a lifetime journey of education that will extend throughout the anesthesiologist's career. We select candidates which have keen intellectual ability, the highest moral and ethical standards, broad humanistic abilities, and the crucial drive and motivation to make a serious commitment to an intense and demanding educational experience. Our goals are high, but for those who will seriously undertake this commitment, residency can be the most rewarding of experiences.

Beyond the facilities of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City is a rich and diverse metropolitan area that offers a plethora of cultural, outdoor, culinary, nightlife, and family-friendly activities.  Local communities accommodate a range of lifestyles, from single individuals to families, with reasonable commute times, affordable housing, and highly-rated schools.

Program Overview

Our program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and offers 12 categorical positions per year. The PGY-1 year is tailored to clinical training that builds a strong foundation in critical care and procedural based practices.  The training is located at the nearby INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The clinical anesthesia training years ( PGY2- PGY4) occurs on our Oklahoma Health Sciences Center campus: locations include OU Medical Center, The Children’s Hospital, The VA Medical Center, The OU Medical Center Surgery Center and The Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center.

The three year Clinical Anesthesia curriculum is based on The American Board of Anesthesiology requirements.
