Frederico Vieira, MD

Frederico Vieira, MD

Assistant Professor

1200 North Everett Drive; ETNP 7504
Oklahoma City, OK 73104

Dr. Vieira's interests are related to vascular development in preterm neonates, especially in the retina vasculature. He uses oxidative disease models that mimic the retinopathy of prematurity. Furthermore, he is interested in the innate immune function of surfactant proteins and intends to expand its investigation in other systems outside the respiratory system.

Clinical/Research Interests:

Dr. Vieira, during his neonatal fellowship, has investigated the presence of surfactant protein D (SP-D) in the mouse retina and possible effects due to the immune function of this protein. He continued to pursue other inflammatory pathways in the newborn mouse retina, currently investigating inflammasome effects in the mouse retina.
Dr. Vieira, with his colleague's support, intends to investigate the effects of SP-D in other tissues outside the respiratory system. He plans to determine the possible correlation of SP-D and gut injury in a mouse model of necrotizing enterocolitis.
Clinically, Dr. Vieira is the Oklahoma University site PI for “Safety of Sildenafil in Premature Infant at Risk for Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia”.
