EMS for Children

Oklahoma Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Resource Center is located within the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Department of Pediatrics, Section of General Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. EMSC is a national initiative designed to reduce child and youth disability and death due to severe illness and injury. Oklahoma EMSC was established in 1992 through a federal grant from the Health Resource Services Administration's (HRSA) Maternal Child Health Bureau. HRSA continues to administer the program at the national level in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Federal grants fund each state and U.S. Territory to improve existing emergency medical services (EMS) systems and to develop and evaluate improved procedures and protocols for treating children. This is the only federal program that focuses specifically on improving the quality of children's emergency care. Currently, only State governments and accredited schools of medicine are eligible to receive EMSC grants.
