Resilience and Coping Intervention (RCI)

Developed by TDC's Sandra Allen after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, RCI is a skill-enhancing group coping exercise focused on children's individual coping and resilience. Children become familiar with the concepts and language of coping and resilience, and they learn and practice coping skills. RCI encourages children to share their experiences and feelings, to identify appropriate and successful coping strategies, and to practice and evaluate the success of these efforts.

RCI may be completed in a single session or used as often as needed or desired to allow children to revisit the coping strategies identified in previous sessions or to discuss new challenges children may be facing in their daily lives. Repeating RCI sessions with the same group of children reinforces lessons learned in earlier sessions and strengthens children's connections with other children in the group. RCI can be implemented in schools or in after-school, community, faith-based, or clinical programs and can be conducted by trained teachers, counselors, youth program staff, volunteers, parents, or other adults.
