General Psychiatry Residency

Welcome

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the adult psychiatry residency webpage for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the OU College of Medicine. We appreciate your interest in our program and hope you will consider joining us to continue your graduate medical education in psychiatry. Our program has a long, proud history and we are dedicated to training psychiatrists to support our community and state.

A distinction that sets us apart from other programs is that residents form close bonds with each other, faculty, and staff; however, we work in the midst of a growing, progressive academic medical center and department with cutting edge research in behavioral and neurosciences. That said, this program is ideal for those who want the comfort of a small and growing program yet like the excitement and challenges of a dynamic university environment. Another distinction is our balance. While some programs place a great deal of emphasis on the biological approach for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, we provide training for psychiatrists who desire a good balance between psychopharmacology and rational psychotherapeutic modalities. We seek to develop psychologically-minded psychiatrists who provide the highest level of comprehensive, compassionate patient care.

Our progressive faculty is committed to leading this effort with active mentoring, research, supervisory, and educational pursuits. The program is fully accredited by the ACGME for a total of 24 residents. We will be interviewing for six (6) PGY-I resident positions per year. There are currently 80 faculty members in the department representing the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work at OU Medical Center and Veterans Affairs Medical Center. We have more than 170 adjunct faculty members teaching rotations, grand rounds, and didactics.

The Oklahoma City metro and surrounding areas are rapidly growing and offer a tremendous variety of activities and cultural events to suit everyone’s tastes. On the 2014 Kiplinger Report, Oklahoma City ranked number one for starting a small business and has one of the fastest growing economies among US cities. It offers affordable housing, great climate, excellent schools, minimal traffic, a professional sports franchise, and a major military installation. On behalf of the department chair, staff, residents, and faculty, we welcome you to Oklahoma City and hope you will consider joining our program.
