Meet the Dean

John P. Zubialde was appointed Executive Dean of the OU College of Medicine in May 2019 after serving as the Interim Executive Dean since July 2018.

Zubialde completed both his medical degree and residency in family medicine at the University of New Mexico School Of Medicine. After residency, he served in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Major and serving as Chief of Family Medicine Services at the U.S. Air Force Clinic and Hospital at Tinker Air Force Base.

In 1991, he joined the OU College of Medicine faculty and holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. He served as program director of the OU Family Medicine Residency from 1994 to 2000, then as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education from 2000 until August 2015. He was then appointed Senior Associate Dean for the College of Medicine.

Zubialde has researched, written about, and presented internationally on topics ranging from care of the complex patient to health systems planning and leadership development. He is a member of the College of Medicine’s Academy of Teaching Scholars and has received the academy’s M. Dewayne Andrews Excellence in Teaching Award.

Zubialde has been very active in state and community service, including serving on the Health Workforce Subcommittee of the Governor’s Council on Workforce and Economic Development. For more than 25 years, he has served the city’s underserved patient population as a volunteer provider at the Good Shepherd Clinic in downtown Oklahoma City.
