Intestinal glucose transporter regulation and function on diabetes development. Excessive glucose intake is one of the major contributors of metabolic disorders including insulin resistance and diabetes. A better understanding of the regulation of dietary glucose uptake in the small intestine will help curb metabolic disorders. Our lab identified the Drosophila Solute Carrier 5A5 (dSLC5A5) as the first dietary glucose transporter in the fly midgut (analogous to mammalian small intestine). Our analysis of the role of dSLC5A5 in the fly’s glucose response revealed several new mechanisms that govern dietary glucose transporter regulation and function.
