Medical Students' Awards

THE FRED G. SILVA MEDICAL LEADERSHIP AWARD
Established January, 2000

Given in recognition of the contributions of Dr. Fred G. Silva, former Chairman of the Department of Pathology, who displayed the finest qualities of leadership and interpersonal skills and encouraged student involvement in all aspects of the educational endeavor (including medical leadership and professional growth) while working tirelessly and selflessly to advance the stature of the medical profession and the College of Medicine to the community at large. This award is presented to a senior medical student who demonstrates those professional qualities and leadership skills that will promote the understanding of the role of medicine in today's society.

ROBERT M. O'NEAL AWARD
Established 1974 

The Robert M. O'Neal Award is presented annually to the sophomore medical student who, in the opinion of the faculty of the Department of Pathology, has demonstrated outstanding performance in the course "Introduction to Human Illness".  The recipient will have his/her name engraved on permanent plaques in the lobby of the Basic Science Education Building and in the Department of Pathology and will be listed as the award recipient in the class's graduation program.  Also, the award carries an unrestricted cash award of $250.00 funded by the Oklahoma State Association of Pathologists.  Students are nominated by the faculty and the criteria include didactic performance as well as workshop performance (attitude, enthusiasm, leadership, judgment, etc.).  The Director of Undergraduate Teaching Programs for the Department of Pathology will then select the recipient.
