Medical Student Rotations and Research Opportunities

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Rehabilitation provides clinical and research opportunities to medical students both as a part of the regular medical curriculum and in the forms of electives. Research opportunities are available to students who are interested in pursuing orthopedic surgery. For more information please click here to fill out the research questionnaire.
*Research opportunities are limited to The University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine students at this time.

Orthopedic Surgery Selective Rotation

During the two-week "selective" rotation, students are given the freedom to craft their experience between the Trauma service or Pediatric service.Because residents in Orthopedic Surgery take "home call", we do not expect students on Orthopedic Surgery rotations to be on call, but students may elect to stay for after-hours cases if work-hour requirements are met.

Fourth Year Medical Students

Students interested in a more intensive orthopedic surgery experience may choose to enroll in a fourth-year elective rotation. Most students prefer the 4th year Sub-Internship elective, consisting of close, hands-on training and preparation to become an orthopedic surgery resident. This rotation will spend two weeks on Trauma and two weeks on Pediatric services.

Special studies rotation in Orthopedic Surgery is available as a mentorship model research training experience. This generally requires a relationship with the department and an expectation to work on a particular project, however, interested students should contact the course coordinator for more information on the course and possible research topics.

Finally, for students who are not planning on pursuing a orthopedic surgery residency, but would like in-depth exposure to orthopedics nonetheless, there is a two week clinical/non-surgical elective available for students in their fourth year of education.

Visiting Medical Students

Students from other medical schools are welcome and encouraged to enroll in our four-week elective in orthopedic surgery. Those interested in our program may request to be scheduled through the VSLO application process. Upon receiving your VSLO application, our education program coordinator will send an additional form to the email listed on your application. Both application through VSLO and submission of the form provided by the education program coordinator are required for consideration for an elective course position.
