The OU department of combined Internal
Medicine-Pediatrics Program consists of four years of training in the care of
patients of all ages.
The clinical education of each
Medicine-Pediatrics resident is integrated with the OU department of
categorical Internal Medicine and Pediatrics programs. Due to the nature of our
X+Y schedule and the broad range of clinical settings we must master, we uphold
a 16-month intern year to equip each intern with the necessary experiences to
perform as an upper level resident. Following intern year, residents will
progress through 32 months of training as upper-level residents under the
supervision of faculty physicians and fellows. Individual roles, expectations,
and responsibilities advance in a graduated fashion with each resident as he or
she demonstrates increasing skills and knowledge in accordance with the ACGME
Core Competencies. Opportunities to participate in scholarly activities are
available throughout the training program; but are emphasized to a greater
degree in the 3rd and 4th years of residency.
Our schedule follows an X+Y pattern of 6+2
(meaning 6 weeks of core rotations or electives followed by 2 weeks emphasizing
ambulatory medicine and resident education). This schedule promotes improved
wellness for our residents while providing focused training in ambulatory
medicine and increased protected time dedicated to resident education. We
alternate between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with each 8-week block. Our
residents are integrated into the “backup” systems and overnight call schedule
of our categorical programs. At this time our program does not include any
at-home call.
Upon completion of the four-year program, our
Internal Medicine-Pediatrics graduates are eligible to sit for both the
American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics
certifying examinations.
The mission of the University of Oklahoma
Science Center Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program is to foster the
next generation of Med-Peds physicians who will provide excellent care for
patients of all ages. Residents are equipped to provide patient-centered,
compassionate, and high-value care in both inpatient and outpatient settings
for the diverse population of Oklahoma.
