Cardiovascular Diseases

The Cardiovascular Section offers ACGME accredited fellowships in cardiovascular diseases, clinical electrophysiology and interventional cardiology. We also offer a non-ACGME approved fellowship program in vascular medicine.

Our team of highly specialized healthcare professionals have cardiovascular care experience in such fields as heart rhythm disorders (including the preeminent cardiac ablation laboratories in the world), invasive and noninvasive management of coronary artery disease including sophisticated interventional programs, congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure, echocardiography, implantable electronic devices (including pacemakers, defibrillators, and hemodynamic monitoring), nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and vascular medicine.

Digestive Diseases and Nutrition

The Digestive Diseases and Nutrition Section trains students and physicians to care for patients and to carry out research in diseases of the digestive system and  human nutrition.

The section’s research activities involve gastrointestinal stem cells (especially their involvement in cancer development, prevention, and therapy), study of Barrett's esophagus, study of pancreatic cancer, colon cancer screening, novel viral hepatitis therapies, clinical outcomes of endoscopic ultrasound, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Two faculty members have included novel endoscopic therapies into their practice, including endoscopic mucosal resection and radiofrequency ablation procedures, to remove early cancerous and precancerous lesions from the lining of the digestive tract with endoscopic instruments.  Currently, we are the major center in the state for endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP.  These specialized endoscopic interventions have made the University of Oklahoma the most premier digestive care facility in the state.

Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism

The Endocrinology and Diabetes Section provides comprehensive training in the pathophysiology, evaluation, diagnosis, and management of the broad spectrum of endocrine diseases and diabetes. There is a strong emphasis on research and scholarly activity. Our professional educational programs are aimed not only at medical students, residents, and fellows, but also at the broad spectrum of health care providers in hospitals and in the community who must work as a team to provide first class clinical care.

The Section is a core component of the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center at OU Medicine. Our clinical work encompasses the full spectrum of Diabetes and Endocrinology, including thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, bone, gonadal, and metabolic disorders.

General Internal Medicine

General Internal Medicine physicians apply their knowledge and expertise to the diagnosis and management of diseases of adults.  Known as “internists”, they provide care ranging from healthy lifestyle promotion and prevention of disease through the diagnosis and management of complex medical problems.  Internists must complete four years of medical school and three to four additional years of residency training (focused entirely on adults) and are well-trained to manage the full spectrum of adult diseases, including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and asthma (to name just a few).  Formerly referred to as “diagnosticians”, internists are particularly adept at the diagnosis of perplexing problems.  While internists are often consulted by other physicians for their extensive knowledge of diagnosis and treatment, they make excellent primary care physicians for patients 18 years of age and older and are able to provide ongoing care through a patient’s advanced years and most severe of medical illnesses.

Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine

The section of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine is committed to providing quality education for future leaders in geriatrics and practicing health care providers, outstanding service to Seniors, and excellence in aging-related research.

We are dedicated to improving the care of older adults by achieving excellence in patient care, research, education, and program innovation. Our one-year, ACGME Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and our Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship are central to our mission and our experienced faculty are devoted to ensuring that each fellow is prepared for a leadership role in healthcare and medical education.

Hematology/Oncology

The Hematology Oncology Section’s Fellowship Program is located in the NCI designated Stephenson Cancer Center which is tied to the Oklahoma University Medical Center. Our mission is to train the next generation of hematologists/oncologists in a program that encompasses cutting edge clinical oncology, hematology and cellular therapy. Our fellows benefit not only from an academic clinical faculty of more than 20, but also from the rich translational environment that includes basic scientists in the Stephenson Cancer Center and our robust clinical trial program.  Our trials program is first in the nation in accrual to cooperative group oncology LAPS trials and in the top 10 in accruals to phase 1 studies.

Hospital Medicine

The Section of Hospital Medicine section is comprised of faculty physicians and APPs committed to providing the highest quality patient care to the citizens of Oklahoma and surrounding regions and delivering top-notch clinical education to the medical students and Internal Medicine residents of the University of Oklahoma. We care for some of the sickest patients with most complex pathologies in the nation. We are the state of Oklahoma’s safety net for difficult diagnoses and advanced disease given the expertise of our clinicians and the broad complement of world class subspecialists we partner with. We serve as teaching faculty on the inpatient services and we give clinical lectures to learners. We participate in all three pillars of the tri-partite mission of academic medicine – patient care, education, and research – and we seek to continuously improve in all areas.

Infectious Diseases

The Section of Infectious Diseases is dedicated to achieving the highest quality patient care and postdoctoral fellowship training in infectious diseases. This is achieved by our strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and collegiality, commitment to life-long learning and professionalism.

Infectious diseases is one of the most exciting and challenging disciplines of medicine. This program is dedicated to providing all fellows with an exceptional fellowship experience to serve as a foundation for a successful clinical career. Clinical training is provided through an ACGME accredited training program for ABIM subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases.

Nephrology

The Section of Nephrology and Hypertension provides medical care for patients with all types of kidney and kidney-related conditions, including chronic renal failure, acute renal failure, renal transplantation, hypertension (high blood pressure), nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), fluid/electrolyte disorders, and acid/base disorders.  All types of acute renal replacement therapy (dialysis and related modalities) are offered, and the Section is part of an active renal transplant program.

Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine

The Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine faculty also includes faculty with additional board-certification in Sleep Medicine as well as additional certification in Interventional Pulmonary.

Our fellowship program aims to develop a diverse group of future leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Our fundamental goal is to provide an intellectual environment that helps trainees acquire the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes essential for independent practice. We are able to tailor the program to the career aspirations of our fellows.

Rheumatology, Immunology, and Allergy

The Section of Rheumatology provides comprehensive evaluation and management of a wide range of diseases that affect the muscles, bones, joints, and the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, psoriatic arthritis, sarcoid, and vasculitis, among others.

We are dedicated to improving the care of our patients by providing essential acute hospital and longitudinal outpatient care, providing access to clinical trials, and treating with the highest level of evidence based medicine.  Our 2-year ACGME Rheumatology fellowship provides a robust clinical experience with a diverse patient population. There is tremendous flexibility within the fellowship to allow fellows to prepare for private practice, academic or industry aspirations.
