Resident Research & Tiger Day

We believe research is an integral part of training in OB/GYN.  Starting intern year, our residents receive education in study design during their rotation in Evidence Based Medicine.  There are very few residency programs in the country who invest an entire rotation committed to providing residents with a solid foundation in research design.  Journal clubs during education time continue to build on this knowledge throughout the year.  Residents are required to complete a comprehensive research project which culminates in a publication by the end of their residency.  Dr. Katie Smith serves as the Resident Research Advisor and helps to match residents with appropriate faculty mentors for their research projects.   Second-year residents develop a project in collaboration with a faculty member and present their proposal at Tiger Day.  During third and fourth year, residents complete the project, submit for publication, and present at Tiger Day.  We also encourage residents to submit their research projects to regional and national meetings for both poster and oral presentations. 

Aside from the above requirements, we are very proud that our residents and fellows participate in their own research, both with generalists and subspecialists.  

Tiger Day is our resident research day for the department of OB/GYN that is held annually in the spring.   This celebration of research has a long-standing tradition, beginning in 1974.   Clinics are canceled and efforts are made by faculty and residents to come together for the day which showcases the diverse research talents of our residents, fellows and faculty.  It is continually adapted to the department and most recently included the following:

• Presentations on proposed projects from second year residents
• Final presentations on completed projects from third and fourth year residents
• Presentation of the best Quality Improvement study
• Final presentations from OBGYN fellows on their research

The research presented seeks to answer questions in patient care as well as resident and medical student education, with the goal of challenging current thinking to improve patient care.  After presentations, a reception is held and awards are distributed by the Bengal Residents of Obstetrics and Gynecology (BROG society) as well as by community physicians.
