Meet the Student Affairs Team

Our Mission

The Office of Student Affairs serves as a primary resource for OU College of Medicine students, provide guidance on everything from course scheduling to career advising and The Match. The office is comprised of dedicated professionals whose primary goal is the success of our future physicians.

Our Team

Teresa Scordino, M.D. | Associate Dean for Student Affairs


Dr. Teresa Scordino (she/her/hers) is an Associate Professor of Pathology and director of the Hematopathology section at OU Health. She is originally from Long Island, New York.  Dr. Scordino graduated from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 2007 and completed her pathology residency at Emory University in 2011, followed by a hematopathology fellowship at Stanford University in 2012.  She joined the faculty at OU in 2012, and served as the course director for the Blood, Hematopoiesis and Lymphatics course (2019-2022) and Assistant Dean for Preclinical Curriculum (2019-2021) before joining the Office of Student Affairs in July 2022 as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

Dr. Scordino’s hobbies include starting new hobbies (but not finishing them). She lives in Oklahoma City with several musical instruments that she cannot play, various unused kitchen gadgets, and a sewing machine still in its original packaging.




Katie Smith, M.D. | Assistant Dean for Student Affairs

Dr. Katie Smith (she/her/hers) is a native Oklahoman.  She graduated from the OU College of Medicine in 2004 and finished her residency in 2008.  She is an Associate Professor in the department of OBGYN and serves as its Section Chief for the Academic Generalists.  Her areas of focus in clinical practice include gynecologic surgery and lower genital tract disease.  In 2019, she completed the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Leadership Development for Physicians Program and is a member of the Academy of Teaching Scholars.

Dr. Smith has been involved in medical education throughout her career, serving as the director of the OBGYN Clerkship from 2015 to 2019, she has served as co-chair of the curriculum evaluation subcommittee and was delighted to join the Office of Student Affairs in the Fall of 2019 as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.  Her role in Student Affairs is the Director of the Career Advising and Mentoring Program focusing on developing new and innovative career advising strategies for the college.

Dr. Smith prides herself on owning too many pairs of shoes and coats, finding solutions to problems she was not asked to solve, and being competitive in all things. Among her favorite activities, Dr. Smith enjoys using her Peloton equipment, watching sports and sporting events, and spending time with her husband and two daughters.



Logan Lockhart, M.Ed. | Director of Student Services

Logan (she/her/hers) hails from the great state of Texas. A native of Dallas, she bravely ventured north to Norman, Oklahoma in pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (2009) and a Master of Education in Community Counseling (2011). 

Logan began her career on the OU Norman campus, where she served as an academic life coach and academic advisor for conditionally admitted first-year students. During her ten years on the Norman campus, she gained a firm foundation in retention, academic development, student engagement and event planning.

In her current role with the OU College of Medicine, Logan enjoys working with a population of students pursuing professional degrees and applying her diverse skillset to the advancement of future physicians.

Among her favorite activities, Logan enjoys spending time with her husband and dogs, attempting home improvement projects, and traveling.



Evan Blackburn, M.Ed. | Assistant Director of Student Services

Evan (he/him/his) joined the office of Student Affairs for the College of Medicine (COM) at the beginning of 2020. He has worked in higher education in several different areas including undergraduate advising and admissions. Evan graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 2015 with his Bachelor’s degree and completed a Master of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2019.

When not working, Evan enjoys woodworking, blacksmithing, disc golf and fire breathing. 



Kenny Vermilion, M.Ed. | Student Program Coordinator

Kenny (she/her/hers) grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas but left one university town for another as she ventured over to Norman to attend the University of Oklahoma pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Advertising (2020). During her undergraduate degree, she was involved in many campus life organizations that led her to want to pursue Student Affairs as a career. In December 2021, she graduated with her Master of Education in Adult and Higher Education and joined the Office of Student Affairs full-time in January 2022.  Her role in COM Student Affairs focuses on Student Life and Wellness, special events and effective communication between our office and students.

In her free time, she enjoys playing fetch with her rescue dog, Maeve, going on walks, watching Marvel movies with her partner, Daniel, and planning which National Park she wants to hike next.



Chelsea Sather, M.Ed. | Student Program Coordinator

Chelsea Sather (she/her/hers) is originally from Utah and a proud alumnus of the University of Utah, where she completed her Bachelor's Degree in Communication. Chelsea moved to Oklahoma in 2018 to attend the University of Oklahoma, where she completed her Master of Education in Adult and Higher Education. Chelsea has worked in various roles in higher education, ranging from international student services to health promotion. Her career passion is rooted in student development and loves working with students to reach their educational and professional goals. She is excited to be working with the College of Medicine.

When she’s not working, Chelsea enjoys spending time outdoors (especially in the sun) and trying new coffee shops or restaurants. Chelsea lives in Oklahoma City with her partner and their Australian Sheppard. 



Edith Torres | Administrative Assistant

Edith (she/her/hers) currently serves as the Student Affairs Administrative Assistant. She assists the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in scheduling meetings, answering questions, and handling graduate verifications along with assisting with MSPE’s scheduling and letters.



Abel Vaughn-Valencia, M.A. | Graduate Assistant

Abel Vaughn-Valencia (he/him/his) serves as the graduate assistant for COM Student Affairs. Abel is a native Texan, former Chicagoan, and is now an Oklahoman. Abel is pursuing a Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree in pursuit of a career as a licensed professional counselor (LPC). Before returning to graduate school, Abel had a career in marketing and creative services for several organizations, in Texas and Chicago. Abel completed his Master of Arts in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin in 2016 and his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from Texas State University in 2011.

Abel is an avid collector of books that often go unread, and he loves to travel and try new restaurants. Abel lives in Oklahoma City with his husband and their two cats.
