Director for the Lipidomics and Metabolomics Mass Spectrometry Laboratory
OUHSC is seeking an open-rank faculty member (non-tenure track) in the Department of Biochemistry and Physiology (https://medicine.ouhsc.edu/academic-departments/biochemistry-and-physiology) to serve as Director of the new OUHSC Lipidomics and Metabolomics Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. This is a unique opportunity to lead a new core facility that provides comprehensive biological mass spectrometry support for biomedical investigators using state-of-the-art instruments and technologies. Equipped with advanced LC/MS systems and the potential for additional instruments, this facility is poised to significantly enhance the capabilities of the core and provide cutting-edge research services to the scientific community. The Director of this facility will provide scientific oversight, manage daily operations, develop novel methodologies, and collaborate closely with investigators to support cutting-edge research. This role specifically calls for a dynamic leader capable of maintaining high standards of technical excellence, recruiting additional technical expertise, and fostering a highly collaborative research environment as a member of the vibrant lipid research community at OUHSC and other institutions nationwide.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Ph.D. (preferred) or equivalent experience in bioanalytical chemistry, lipidomics, metabolomics or relevant subject area.
Main Responsibilities:
- Scientific Oversight: Develop and maintain lipidomics and metabolomics workflows to conduct lipid and small metabolite analyses for investigators at OUHSC and other institutions (academic, government, and industry).
- Facility Management: Oversee day-to-day operations, including supervising instruments, handling maintenance, and collaborating with technical staff by providing hands-on support in sample preparation, MS analyses, data acquisition, and analyses.
- Method Development: Spear head the development of novel methods to address investigator needs, ensuring cutting-edge capabilities within the facility.

- Investigator Collaboration: Partner with investigators in experimental design, sample preparation, data interpretation, and project support.
- Data Communication: Deliver analyzed datasets (figures, text, data tables) to investigators and assist in writing manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications.
- Training and Guidance: Provide technical training and problem-solving solutions to students, postdocs, and investigators conducting lipidomics and metabolomics experiments.
- Fundraising and Advancement: Lead fundraising efforts to maintain state-of-the-art facilities, instrumentation, software, and data analysis pipelines.
Required Skills:
• Extensive experience in mass spectrometry, particularly in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting nano-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems.
• Proficiency in developing custom methods to meet specific investigator needs.
• Expertise in established lipidomics and metabolomics data analyses and bioinformatic tools.
• Strong skills in data management, interpretation and integration.
• Experience in developing business models for successful core facility operation.
• Experience with writing grant applications and maintaining core budgets and finances.
• Exceptional multi-tasking, time management and organizational skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Leadership qualities including honesty, integrity, flexibility, creativity, and a collaborative spirit.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and/or tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Desired Skills:
• Experience with imaging MS and/or multi-omic experiments and data set integration.
• Familiarity with establishing automated lab processes.
• Proficiency using commercial lipidomics software, including LIPID MAPs.
• Programming skills, particularly in R or Python.
