An OU Physicians Family Medicine physician, educator and researcher, James W. Mold, MD, MPH, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine, a Washington, D.C.,-based institute that serves as the nation's adviser to improve health.
Considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, election to the institute recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
"The University is extremely proud of the recognition of Dr. Mold for his significant contributions to national health policy," said OU President David L. Boren.
Mold is professor and director of research in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the OU College of Medicine. His research focuses on primary care physicians and their role in preventive medicine, mainly the effect and efficiency of family doctors talking to patients about diet, exercise and smoking during each visit to reduce obesity and chronic disease.
Mold's research team shares data with dozens of participating doctors throughout Oklahoma to help them design prevention programs that work for their offices and local communities. The overall goal is to improve Oklahoma's health outcomes. "I am impressed with the work that the Institute of Medicine has done, so it's a great honor to be selected as a member. I hope to have a chance to participate in some of that work," Mold said.
Established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine is recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on human health issues.
