Oklahoma Children's Hospital houses the only children's emergency department inside of a freestanding pediatric hospital, treating over 47,000 children each year. OU Health is also home to the state’s only American College of Surgeons Level One Pediatric Trauma Center and partners with Oklahoma Children's Hospital to provide life-saving interventions to pediatric trauma patients. Our dedicated physician, nursing, and ancillary staff are equipped to manage the most complicated medical, traumatic, surgical, and psychosocial emergencies. Double ED Attending Physician coverage is provided 24 hours a day in the Oklahoma Children’s Emergency Room with all pediatric sub-specialties available for in-person consultation. Both the Hospitalist Team and Pediatric Intensive Care Services provide in-house coverage 24/7 to support our mission of State-of-the-Art care for the ill and injured children in Oklahoma and surrounding states.
The Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) is home to the largest Fellowship Program in the Department of Pediatrics. PEM annually trains twelve PEM Fellows who provide coverage between 20-24 hours a day in the Emergency Department. PEM also trains residents from Pediatrics, Med-Peds, Emergency Medicine, and Family Medicine programs, as well as medical students attending medical school. Additionally, both the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMS-C) Resource Center and the Child Protection Team are housed in this section.
