Pathology investigates the molecular and cellular basis of human disease and connects fundamental scientific discovery with clinical understanding. The PhD program in Experimental Pathology provides a research environment where students study how disease processes arise, progress, and respond to therapeutic intervention. This bridge between basic science and clinical application gives the program a distinct identity within the biomedical sciences.

Training in Pathology emphasizes the experimental study of disease mechanisms. Students learn modern approaches in molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, and genetics and apply these tools to understand how cellular dysfunction leads to human illness. Faculty maintain active research programs across diverse areas of experimental pathology, supported by well equipped laboratories and core facilities in histology, molecular pathology, flow cytometry, genomics, bioinformatics, and centralized animal care. Collaborative opportunities with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and the Stephenson Cancer Center provide additional research depth and access to advanced instrumentation.

The Pathology PhD program builds on this foundation by giving students a focused environment to investigate disease mechanisms and develop as independent scientists. Graduates are prepared for careers in academic research, industry, government laboratories, clinical leadership with additional certification, science communication, and consulting.

GPiBS Pathway Program

Prospective students initially apply to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) program at the OU Health Campus and complete the first year GPiBS curriculum under this umbrella program. This interdisciplinary foundation allows students to explore different research interests before joining a Pathology laboratory.

Curriculum

The OU Health Campus Pathology PhD program is a research-focused degree within the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS).  It features an integrated first-year curriculum common to GPiBS students, including lab rotations.  Following this, students specialize in experimental pathology, dedicating most of their time to dissertation research ina faculty lab.  The program combines didactic coursework with extensive hands-on laboratory experience, culminating in a qualifying exam and dissertation defense.

Admission Requirements

Qualified students possessing baccalaureate degrees in a biological science, e.g. biology, biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or zoology, may pursue a PhD degree in Pathology. Students desiring to enter the Pathology Graduate Program should apply to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS). Applicants must follow the general admission procedures and requirements set forth by GPiBS. An application must be filed with the Office of Admissions and be accompanied by official transcripts and, for foreign applicants, TOEFL results. In addition, three letters of recommendation from individuals who can address the applicant’s research potential and suitability for graduate study are required. In special cases, students may apply for admission directly into the Pathology Graduate Program.
