General Surgery Residency Program

The Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine offers six categorical general surgery positions each academic year. All categorical PGY-1 residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program. In our program, on average, chief residents perform more than 300 major procedures in their final year. In the years prior to becoming chief residents, residents perform an average of 1000 operations and serve as the first assistant on an additional 200-300 procedures, which include virtually all operations in the field of general surgery, as well as numerous bedside procedures critical to the care of patients.

Our initial interview invitations will be sent towards the end of October via Thalamus. All candidates will have 48 hours to respond. After this window expires, we will utilize our waitlist for a rolling set of invitations. We will continue to evaluate candidates from our waitlist through the last interview date.

Our Mission and Aims

The mission of the General Surgery Residency Program includes advancing surgery in Oklahoma and beyond by training surgeons to become skilled clinicians, pioneering researchers, and future leaders.

We aim to train residents who can excel in a variety of practice environments from the remote rural setting to the tertiary care academic environment with ongoing dedication to quality patient care and lifelong learning. Furthermore, we strive to assure residents are successful in the pursuit of advanced training if desired. This is accomplished through a curriculum that emphasizes tertiary care, but also has opportunities to experience community and rural practice settings with minimal competition from fellows. We support scholarship and professional development along with skills and knowledge acquisition through faculty and staff who are committed to resident education in a setting of strong departmental support. We encourage and foster an environment around inquiry, collegiality, and quality patient care.
