Instructions for Applicants

The University of Oklahoma participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The General Surgery Residency Program has six ACGME approved categorical positions and one rural-categorical position. Our preliminary residency positions are available based on institutional funding availability. We do not offer interviews for preliminary positions except on a case by case basis. The General Surgery Residency Program assesses all applications through ERAS.

We review all applicants to our program, with selection emphasis towards applicants whom have signaled us through ERAS and LCME Accredited Medical Schools. We invite preliminary residents to apply for our categorical positions.

Application Process for Categorical General Surgery Residency

1. The application must be complete prior to receiving an invitation to interview. All applications must be submitted using ERAS, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.
2. A completed ERAS application contains the following documents: 

  • Official Medical School Transcript
  • Official record of USMLE Step Scores (Step 1 and 2)
  • MSPE (Medical School Performance Evaluation) Dean’s Letter
  • Three (3) current letters of recommendation, please send via ERAS 
    • For preliminary residents applying, a letter from the current program director is required*
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Current ECFMG Status Report (for international medical graduates)
  • Photograph
  • Current Telephone Number/Email

International graduates with a valid ECFMG certificate and valid visa or permanent resident status are eligible to apply and must meet all criteria mentioned above. International medical graduates are sponsored on J-1 visas. All appointments for residency are subject to ability to obtain an unrestricted Oklahoma medical license. We do not offer observerships.

Interview and Second Look Information

Our recruitment process will be conducted virtually through the Thalamus Platform. In addition, we are pleased to offer two in-person "Second Look" opportunities for applicants interested in visiting our Surgery Program and touring the University of Oklahoma Health - Oklahoma City Campus. Please note that the interview format and participation in Second Look events will have no impact on an applicant's position on the final rank list.

  • We will offer five (5) virtual interview dates between November and January
  • No interviews are scheduled between December 7th and January 7th
  • Interview invitations will be extended on a rolling basis until all available slots are filled
  • We will not schedule more interviews than the number of available slots
  • Invited applicants will have 48 hours to accept their initial interview offer
    • Waitlisted applicants may be given a shorter response window in the event of cancellations

What to know

Getting into a Residency program and staying in it means following the rules set by both the College of Medicine and the State Medical Board. It is not just about getting accepted; you also need to meet all the training and licensing requirements along the way. If certain rules, especially those around licensing exams, aren't followed on time, your training could be paused or even terminated early. So, it is super important to stay on track and know what is expected.
