Mathew Bender, MD

Undergrad School - Trinity University

Medical School - Texas Tech University School of Medicine

Hometown - Dallas! Yes, Dallas, Dallas! Born and raised.

What have you enjoyed most about residency?

Building long-term relationships with my co-interns and other classes. We’ve been able to get together (spouses and kids included) many times, so it's been nice getting to know everyone. This is a tight-knit group that feels like an extended family.

What are you looking forward to doing during residency?

Surgery, lots of surgery!

What is your favorite OU Ortho tradition?

The annual golf tournament.

What has surprised you most about Oklahoma?

The food scene is impressive. Both my wife and I are big foodies, so we’ve enjoyed exploring all the restaurants.

What hidden benefit of Oklahoma have you enjoyed?

So far, I love OKC! Being from Dallas but living in Lubbock the past 4 years, I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum. OKC is the perfect in-between; you get all the restaurants and activities of a big city with none of the traffic. And seriously, what a perfect time to move here with the Thunder’s dominance. Yes, I’m a Thunder fan now…sorry, Mavericks, you traded Luka.

What has become your favorite place to dine or hang out?

Right now, my favorite restaurant is Jimmy B’s. It reminds me of one of my favorite spots in Dallas. My wife and I also love going to our neighborhood park, the zoo, and the science museum. Really, anything that keeps our 1-year-old entertained.

What is something you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I hang out with my wife and kiddo as much as possible. I love to golf, wish I could play more often. I also try to maintain a consistent workout schedule.

What is your favorite season?

Summer, of course! My birthday is July 3 so I always love a good birthday/July 4th pool party with BBQ and fireworks.

If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?

My wife and I are dying to see New Zealand. I hear they need doctors…

What are you looking forward to doing during residency?

Gaining the skills and confidence to take care of our patient population.

What is your favorite OU Ortho tradition?

Trauma 'staches.

What has surprised you most about Oklahoma?

How much it's grown, even over the last 8 years I've spent on this side of the state!

What hidden benefit of Oklahoma have you enjoyed?

Braum's or being able to own a home during residency, kind of a toss-up.

Can't pick just one! Jimmy B's for a nice date night, Deep Deuce for a casual happy hour, Bar Arbolada for the best burger in OKC.

What is something you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Chase golf balls that I shank around the course, spend time with my wife and family, cook Italian food, and travel.

What is your favorite season?

Fall, specifically the 1-2 month overlap in Sooner football and Thunder basketball season.

Fall time. Football season baby! Plus, I'm a sucker for fall foliage, candles, and decor.

What have you enjoyed most about residency?

The best part of residency so far has been getting to know my fellow co-residents. Starting as an intern can be incredibly intimidating-stepping into the role of the physician youve always aspired to be. But my co-residents have made the transition so much smoother.  They’ve not only been supportive and encouraging, but have also pushed me to grow, learn, and improve every day

What are you looking forward to doing during residency?

What Im most looking forward to is the incredible growth that lies ahead over the next five years.  Even in the short time I’ve been part of the program, I’ve learned so much-both personally and professionally.  I can’t wait for the day I look back on the journey, the memories, and the transformation that took place during my time at OU.

What is your favorite OU Ortho tradition?

As an intern, I havent gotten to be a part of many yearly traditions quite yet, but the pool party at Dr. Chenoweth’s this summer was fantastic.

What has surprised you most about Oklahoma?

The pride Oklahomans have for their sports teams is truly something special. Whether its the electric atmosphere of the NBA finals, the excitement of the Women’s College World Series, or the fierce loyalty to OU and OSU athletics, the people of Oklahoma know how to show up and show out for their teams.

What hidden benefit of Oklahoma have you enjoyed?

My favorite brunch spot is Hatch.

What is something you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love spending my time in the kitchen, cooking and baking new recipes.
