Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program Structure

The first year of the fellowship is dedicated primarily to research. Fellows will have the opportunity to craft an individualized research plan in their area of interest. A wide variety of research options are available to the fellow in health services and outcomes research, basic science, and translational research. The fellow will be encouraged and fully supported to present at regional and national meetings. Fellows will also spend one day per week in the research year engaged in clinical activities in the operating room or clinic.

Fellows will spend their second year as the leaders of the busy clinical service at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital at OU Health, a free-standing women’s and children’s hospital with 250 beds. The pediatric urology service performs over 1,500 cases per year including 60-70 robotic surgeries. The service also consists of a PGY4 and a PGY3 resident who rotate every three months. The fellow will be exposed to all areas of pediatric urology including general pediatric urology, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, complex reconstruction, and Disorders of Sexual Differentiation (DSD). The fellow will also be encouraged to participate in multidisciplinary clinics including spina bifida clinic, stone clinic, and the REACH transition clinic.

During both years of fellowship, fellows will attend departmental conferences including:

  • Indications conferences
  • M&M
  • Multidisciplinary team conferences
  • Radiology conferences

Fellows will also be encouraged to attend and present at regional and national conferences including the SPU Fall Congress, AUA annual meeting, and AUA South Central Section meeting.

Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program Mission & Aims Statement

MISSION STATEMENT

The program mission is to train urologists in the subspecialty domains relevant to pediatric patients. These domains include general pediatric urology, calculus disease, endourology, urodynamics, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, infectious disease of the genitourinary system, neuro-urology, obstructive disease, psychological disorders resulting from genitourinary abnormalities, renovascular disease, surgery of the adrenal, renal transplantation specific to the pediatric patient and trauma. We are equally focused on the three pillars of academic medicine - patient care, education, and research. Through our combined efforts with the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, we strive to improve the lives of all people in the state of Oklahoma and surrounding states.

AIMS

The aim of our program is to provide comprehensive training to fellows in all aspects of pediatric urology. Ultimately, we aim to produce confident and competent pediatric urologists who can lead in their field and excel in providing the highest quality of care.

  • Most of the clinical training for fellows occurs at the OU Children’s Hospital where fellows will collaborate in interprofessional teams including nursing, general pediatrics, general surgery, and plastic surgery.
  • Fellows will learn to master their surgical skills and serve as the primary surgeon with the attending as 1st assistant on all types of pediatric surgeries. Fellows will mature and take the lead in the evaluation of treatment plans for tests, procedures, and all types of pediatric urologic care.
  • The Fellows will participate in research, submit abstracts at national meetings, and become the first author of publications as a contribution to the improvement of pediatric urology patient care. Through this process fellows will learn administrative, speaking, and organizational skills necessary to be a medical speaker.
  • The Fellows will participate in weekly and monthly didactics.
