Personalized Mentorship
Career Mentorship
We work with you to pair you with a faculty career mentor aligned with your interests (e.g., subspecialty or practice setting). While mentorship is in large part what you make of it, your mentor can work with you to:
- Map short‑ and long‑term goals.
- Shape elective choices and scholarly activity to match fellowship or practice ambitions.
- Coach you through CV building, personal statements, interviews, and letters.
- Provide offer and contract navigation, including compensation structures, call expectations, FTE, non‑compete clauses, and tail coverage.
- Connect you with networking opportunities across subspecialties and practice settings.
Research Mentorship
Every resident is matched with a research mentor and completes a required scholarly project (clinical research, QI, medical education, or systematic review). The program supplies:
- Departmental Clinical Studies Unit with staff to help residents and faculty navigate the research process and support resident research projects.
- IRB guidance with templates and timelines.
- Biostatistics support from Dr. Chao Xu, Associate Professor of Biostatistics & Epidemiology at the College of Public Health
- Milestone‑based check‑ins (aims, methods, data collection, analysis, dissemination).
- Abstract/manuscript support, including writing center review, journal targeting, and cover letters.
Protected Time & Financial Support
- Travel: Residents receive protected time for professional travel (conferences, courses, invited presentations).
- Commonly supported venues include AAN, ANA, AES, ISC, CMSC, MDS, AHS, and subspecialty society meetings.
- Funding: Each resident is allotted $2,000 for conference travel with additional funding available if residents are presenting at a conference. In addition, residents receive extra annual funds for books and other development resources (e.g., board prep, review courses, subscriptions, software, study aids).
