Physiology investigates how organs and systems function to maintain human health and how disruptions in these processes contribute to disease. The PhD program provides a research environment where students join faculty mentors studying major areas of human physiology, including geroscience and aging, neuroscience, diabetes and metabolic disease, vision science, and cardiovascular physiology. This breadth gives students the opportunity to work on projects that address pressing biomedical challenges and contribute to discoveries that advance human health.

Training in the Physiology PhD program emphasizes the experimental study of organ and system function. Students learn modern approaches for investigating physiological mechanisms and apply these tools to understand how biological processes change in aging, chronic disease, and injury. The department’s active research community supports collaboration across laboratories and provides opportunities for scientific development through seminars and interactions with faculty and peers.

The Physiology program builds on this foundation by giving students a focused research home where they can deepen their expertise and grow as independent investigators. All students in good standing are supported as Graduate Research Assistants, which includes a stipend, medical insurance, and full tuition waivers.

GPiBS Pathway Program

Prospective students initially apply to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) program at the OU Health Campus and complete the first year GPiBS curriculum under this umbrella program. After their first year, students may be admitted to the Physiology track through joining the laboratory of a participating faculty mentor.

Curriculum

The first semester GPiBS curriculum is uniform for all students in the program and includes:

  • BMSC 5001         Scientific Integrity
  • BMSC 5021         Rigor & Reproducibility in Scientific Methodology
  • BMSC 5031         Laboratory Animal Use and Concepts
  • BMSC 5221         Interdisciplinary First Year Journal Club
  • BMSC 6100         Bioscience Lab Rotation

Students entering the Physiology track at the beginning of their 2nd year will take a 6-credit hour Human Physiology course and a seminar course and conduct research in the primary mentor’s lab. The student who passes the comprehensive exam (usually in the 3rd year) will be admitted to PhD candidacy and complete the dissertation research during the remaining years.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have earned at least a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field with a minimum GPA of 3.0. It is recommended that applicants complete upper division Biology and Biochemistry coursework. Additionally, applicants are expected to have completed a significant amount of relevant hypothesis-driven research prior to applying and being admitted into the program.
