Visiting Student Rotations
The University of Oklahoma, Department of Anesthesiology accepts 4th year MD and DO students from other accredited US medical schools. We believe spending time in a program is the best way to understand the culture and determine if it is the right place for you to spend the next 4 years of your training.
Anesthesiology Rotations available to visiting students include:
- Adult Clinical
- Acute Pain & Regional Blocks
- Chronic Pain
- Trauma Call
- Pediatric
- Cardiothoracic
- Obstetrics
- Neuroanesthesia
- Ambulatory Surgery
- Critical Care
Each student will work along side faculty and residents within our department and gain insight into some of the expanded applications of Anesthesiology. The students will follow assigned patients from preoperative evaluation through convalescence under the supervision of residents and faculty members.
Applications must be submitted through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSLO).
Visiting students are required to provide proof of the following:
- Verification of Current Immunizations
- Personal Health Insurance
- Professional Liability Insurance
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Verification of a passing score on the United States Medical Licensing Exam – USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX level 1.

**The OU Department of Anesthesiology does not provide housing for visiting medical students.**
Student Shadowing Opportunities
The Department of Anesthesiology offers shadowing opportunities for students interested in gaining firsthand exposure to the specialty. This experience allows students to observe a wide range of anesthetic practices, perioperative patient care, and multidisciplinary teamwork in both the operating room and clinical settings. Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside faculty and residents, gaining insight into the critical role anesthesiologists play in patient safety and surgical outcomes.
Shadowing is intended for students in the early stages of medical training who are exploring anesthesiology as a potential career path. Please note that all fourth-year medical students are required to apply for a formal rotation through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program and are not allowed to shadow.
