Research

The Research Division of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine incorporates 14 full-time faculty (3 clinicians and 11 non-clinicians) and 3 staff. Faculty members are involved in various research activities, most of which fall within the categories of primary healthcare practice-based research, community-engaged research (CEnR), translational dissemination and implementation (D&I) research, behavioral science, education research, and research on clinical decision-making.

The Division offers medical student electives in a wide variety of health and healthcare topics and provides a Family Medicine Summer Research Experience (FMSRE) course for medical students after their first year of medical school. The Division also organizes a Journal Club for Family Medicine residents in the Oklahoma City residency program and runs the Clin-IQ program for its residents that allows them to participate in scholarly activity as part of their curriculum.

Members of the Division instruct Family Medicine residents in research methods, critical evaluation of clinical evidence, clinical interviewing, community medicine, and clinical decision making topics. It is also involved in the development and enrichment of the primary care workforce in Oklahoma, including rural, tribal, and medically underserved communities.

The Research Division works closely with the Oklahoma Physicians Resource/Research Network (OKPRN), a nationally acclaimed primary care practice-based research network with over 360 clinician members throughout Oklahoma and it is also linked to the activities of the Oklahoma Clinical and Translational Science Institute (OCTSI).
