Dr. Tierney graduated Summa Cum Laude from Williams College in Williamstown, MA and received his medical degree from Yale University in 1990 and subsequently completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan where he received 2 years of dedicated training for EUS and ERCP. He is currently David Ross Boyd Professor of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma and serves as Chief of Clinical Services, Section of Gastroenterology, and Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. He has received the University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine Gold Humanism Award in Medicine and in 2013 was appointed the David Ross Boyd Professorship. He has served as the Faculty Sponsor, for the OUHSC, College of Medicine, Gold Humanism Honor Society from 2015 - 2021. In March 2013, Dr. Tierney received the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award, a national award presented by the ACGME to honor program directors who find innovative ways to teach residents/fellows and to provide quality health care. In 2015, Dr. Tierney became inducted as a member of the OU College of Medicine Academy of Teaching Scholars and received the Dewayne Andrews, M.D. Excellence in Teaching Award.  Dr. Tierney was also honored with the 2022 American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Distinguished Educator Award at the 2022 ASGE Crystal Awards in San Diego, CA.  He ​has been named to the National Database Castle Connelly's Best Doctors and included in the list of Best Doctors in Oklahoma every year from 2008-2020, the Best Gastroenterologist List in Oklahoma Magazine 2007-2020.  He is committed to service and has served on several national committees including the Governing Board for the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy from 2012 - 2015. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology and has pioneered several endoscopic procedures in the state of Oklahoma.
