Facilities

The major teaching sites are the OU Medical Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Center at the Integris Baptist Medical Center is a participating site as well. All three centers are specialized tertiary care facilities.

OU Medical Center

OU Medical Center is a level one trauma center with an open heart surgery program, pancreas, kidney, and bone marrow transplant programs. It has 84 intensive care beds for patients with severe trauma, shock, open heart and bypass surgeries, acute myocardial infarction, major thoracic and abdominal surgery, severe neurological and neurosurgical conditions, severe liver disease, and medical critical illness. Medical ICU patients typically occupy 12–18 beds at any time. The four intensive units are located on the second floor of the hospital in close proximity and are staffed by critical care nurses and respiratory therapists who are knowledgeable in the care of critically-ill patients and familiar with critical care instrumentation, laboratory medicine, and pulmonary function support.

OUMC features a full complement of imaging and diagnostic services including: helical CT scans, radionuclide scans including ventilation-perfusion lung scans, PET scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and interventional radiology procedures such as pulmonary angiography, IVC filter insertion, TIPS placement, percutaneous biopsy, and drainage of body cavity fluid collections. 

There are comprehensive and timely diagnostic laboratory services including microbiology, cytology, and surgical pathology. There are full-service pulmonary function laboratory (including pulmonary exercise testing and Broncho-provocation testing), cardiac catheterization laboratory, cardiac electrophysiology service and laboratory, and large and busy emergency department.

The space and staffing are appropriate for pulmonary procedures, including bronchoscopy suites with various equipment such as navigational bronchoscopes, linear and radial EBUS, Argon plasma coagulation and rigid bronchoscopes. Diagnostic laboratory and radiology services are available 24 hours per day. OU Medical Center has a 10-bed Accredited adult and pediatric sleep lab.

Veterans' Affairs Medical Center (VAMC)

The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (DVAMC) is a tertiary care facility serving Oklahoma and part of northern Texas and is an integral part of the educational and research mission of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. It houses 30 ICU beds consisting of Medical Intensive Care (MICU), Cardiac Critical Care (CCU) and Surgical Intensive care (SICU) Services.

The DVAMC feature a full complement of imaging and diagnostic services including: helical CT scans, radionuclide scans including ventilation-perfusion lung scans, PET scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and interventional radiology procedures such as pulmonary angiography, IVC filter insertion, TIPS placement, percutaneous biopsy, and drainage of body cavity fluid collections.  There are comprehensive and timely diagnostic laboratory services including microbiology, cytology, and surgical pathology. There are full-service pulmonary function laboratory (including pulmonary exercise testing and Broncho-provocation testing), cardiac catheterization laboratory, cardiac electrophysiology service and laboratory, and large and busy emergency departments.  The space and staffing are appropriate for pulmonary procedures, including a state-of the art bronchoscopy suite with various equipment such as navigational bronchoscopes, linear and radial EBUS, ERBE system with Argon plasma coagulation, pleuroscope and rigid bronchoscopes. Diagnostic laboratory and radiology services are available 24 hours per day. The DVAMC has an in-house home sleep study and actigraphy programs.

Integris Baptist Medical Center

Integris Baptist Medical Center of Oklahoma City is a full-service, acute care, tertiary medical center. It is home to the Nazih Zuhdi transplant center which has a lung transplantation program since 1990. Our rotating fellows gain experience in lung transplantation evaluation, selection and post-operative follow-up as well as in the management of advanced lung diseases, including pulmonary Hypertension. The rotation is supervised by Dr. Alan Betensley, who is adjunct faculty and works closely with the program director to ensure optimal experience for our fellows. 

OU Medical Center Edmond

OU Medical Center Edmond is a satellite facility located about 10 miles from the main campus that provides advanced bronchoscopy services, including EBUS. Fellows attend and perform procedures with faculty on various occasions.
