Trauma

Not every hospital and emergency center can handle every emergency or injury. OU Medicine is home to the state’s only American College of Surgeons-verified Level One Adult and Pediatric Trauma Centers. When patients arrive at the trauma center at OU Medical Center, a board-certified trauma surgeon and a comprehensive team of experts in trauma are available to care for those patients 24/7, which means access to life-saving interventions without delay. OU Medicine partners with The Children’s Hospital to ensure that even pediatric patients can be treated here.

The trauma team uses an organized and systematic approach to the evaluation and care of injured patients. The treatment of injured patients requires rapid assessment of injuries and evaluation of resources needed to address each patient’s specific needs. This rapid and thorough evaluation from a certified and highly trained team is one of the major benefits of being seen at a verified Level One Trauma Center.

Recognition as a Level One Trauma Center is the highest national rating possible, and research has shown that patients who are treated at Level One Trauma Centers are less likely to die from their other injuries. Medical staff at these facilities have attained additional board certifications for critical care, and the facilities are equipped to provide 24-hour availability in all areas of trauma, including emergency general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, emergency medicine physicians, plastic surgery, facial trauma, ophthalmology, pediatric surgery, geriatric medicine and critical care expertise throughout the age spectrum. Our team is dedicated to driving innovation forward with on-site research and clinical trials that help drive the nation in evidence-based practice.

Our Mission: Leading injury care from prevention through recovery.

Our Vision: To be a nationally recognized leader in trauma care.
