Fernando Mier Giraud, MD

Associate Professor of Surgery


Dr. Mier is a board-certified general surgeon at OU Health specializing in metabolic and bariatric surgery, as well as the treatment of benign and malignant disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, adrenal glands, and spleen. He has a passion for nutrition, surgical education, minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

One of his main research interests is the relationship between the gut microbiome and weight loss, as well as its role in inflammation and cancer. Dr. Mier is committed to giving personalized attention to patients and enjoys helping patients become aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.

He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA and Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR. After completing his training, he followed his passion for minimally invasive advanced GI and bariatric surgery and completed a fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University. He is an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and The Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).
