Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

A Message from the Program Director

Dr. Usman Baber

Welcome to the University of Oklahoma Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. Our program has an excellent history of graduating interventional cardiologists with strong clinical and procedural skills who have gone on to successful careers in both academic and private practice settings.

Our experienced faculty provide a diverse and comprehensive training experience. Our procedural volume easily supports two fellows, with each fellow gaining extensive experience in coronary and peripheral interventions, including complex coronary intervention, critical and acute limb ischemia, carotid and venous interventions, IVC filter placement and retrieval, and AAA endografts. Fellows also develop expertise in advanced hemodynamic and intravascular imaging modalities, including IVUS, OCT, infrared spectroscopy, and FFR. Additional training opportunities include structural interventions such as ASD/PFO closures and invasive pulmonary embolism treatment. We are one of a select number of centers with a Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT).

Training Across Academic and Private Practice Settings

Our fellows train at both OU Health and Oklahoma Heart Hospital (OHH), providing a unique opportunity to experience two complementary cardiovascular practice environments.

OHH is a physician-owned cardiovascular hospital and one of the region's leading centers for cardiovascular care. Training at OHH provides fellows with exposure to a high-volume private practice environment and a broad range of cardiovascular procedures, while OU Health provides the academic and tertiary-care experience of a major teaching hospital. This combination prepares our graduates for careers in academic medicine, private practice, or a combination of both.

Our fellows train in modern, state-of-the-art catheterization laboratories and benefit from exposure to a wide range of advanced cardiovascular procedures and technologies.

Education and Life in Oklahoma City

Fellows participate in multiple weekly conferences, including cath conference, journal club, Cardiology Grand Rounds, and other didactic sessions. They also have opportunities to teach and mentor general cardiology fellows, further developing their procedural and teaching skills.

Oklahoma City offers an excellent quality of life, affordable cost of living, a growing food and entertainment scene, outdoor recreation, and numerous opportunities for families and young professionals. Our goal is to provide outstanding clinical training while allowing fellows to enjoy their time in Oklahoma City both inside and outside the hospital.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like additional information about our fellowship program.
