Division of Acute Pain Service

The Acute Pain Service at OU Health is a team of physician anesthesiologists and anesthesia residents within the Department of Anesthesiology who specialize in pain management and regional anesthesia. Our team works closely with your surgeon to provide a comprehensive approach to control pain after surgery. This includes tailoring a combination of pain medications and performing regional anesthesia (“nerve block”).

Nerve blocks are very quick injections, usually performed with an ultrasound machine, to target a specific nerve or set of nerves that are responsible for pain sensation. In some situations, we may place a small catheter to prolong a nerve block during your inpatient stay. We can also place and maintain epidural infusions to assist in pain control after surgery.

Additionally, the OU Acute Pain Service consults in medical pain management postoperatively when requested by your surgeon. Our pain management team has some modalities unique to our service which can be utilized for complex surgeries or for patients with a complex history. When indicated these additional regimens provided by our team may helpful to improve your comfort after surgery.

Our goal is to help you recover faster by keeping your pain controlled after your procedure and throughout your stay at OU Medical Center.
