Shinichiro Yokota, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Surgery


Shinichiro Yokota, MD, PhD is a fellowship-trained multi-organ transplant surgeon and Assistant Professor in the Section of Transplant Surgery, Department of Surgery, at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus. He specializes in general surgery and abdominal organ transplantation, with a clinical focus on liver and kidney transplants for both adult and pediatric patients.

He earned his medical degree from Hirosaki University School of Medicine in Aomori, Japan. He completed two general surgery residencies at Jichi Medical University in Japan and Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. He is board certified by both the Japan Surgical Society and the American Board of Surgery.

He completed his Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he trained under Prof. Marc L. Melcher and Prof. Carlos O. Esquivel, gaining expertise in complex multi-organ transplantation across all age groups.

Dr. Yokota also completed four-year research fellowship in a basic science laboratory at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Prof. David A. Geller, and Prof. Angus W. Thomson. His research on ischemia/reperfusion injury in liver transplantation led to a PhD from Jichi Medical University. His works has earned international recognition, including the Vanguard Award for Best Basic Science Paper from the International Liver Transplant Society and the International Transplantation Science Mentee-Mentor Travel Award at World Transplant Congress.

He has authored thirty-eight peer-reviewed publications, five non-peer-reviewed articles, delivered over forty presentations and invited lectures worldwide.

Dr. Yokota is an active member of several professional societies, including the Japan Surgical Society, the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the Transplantation Society, the International Liver Transplantation Society.
