Clinical Research

At the OU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, research starts with a simple question: how can we take better care of women tomorrow than we do today? Our physicians, scientists and trainees pursue that question everywhere it leads, from the lab bench to the bedside. We study the biology of gynecologic cancers, develop new treatments for infertility and PCOS, search for safer ways to care for mothers and babies, and advance surgery for pelvic floor disorders.

That work has made us one of the nation’s top OB/GYN departments for NIH funding, ranked 22nd in the country, with $16.9 million in research funding. In partnership with the NCI-designated Stephenson Cancer Center and collaborators across the country, we turn discoveries into clinical trials, and those trials into care that reaches patients across Oklahoma and beyond.

What We've been Studying

Gynecologic Oncology

Cancer treatment and prevention

Therapeutic and cancer prevention trials for patients with gynecologic cancers.

Gynecologic Oncology

Survivorship and quality of life

How chemotherapy affects memory and thinking in premenopausal women, whether aspirin helps against ovarian cancer, and ways to ease side effects and improve quality of life.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Antibiotics during labor induction

Whether preventive antibiotics during labor induction lower complications for women with class III obesity.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Omega-3s and fetal growth

Whether high-dose omega-3 fatty acid supplements in pregnancies affected by obesity help protect the baby from excess fat and weight gain.

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

Ovulation induction in PCOS

Adding supporting treatments to ovulation induction for women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

Frozen embryo transfer and blood pressure

How the protocol used for frozen embryo transfer relates to high blood pressure disorders in pregnancy.

Cancer research with Stephenson

The department builds its NCI-funded cancer-focused research together with the NCI-designated Stephenson Cancer Center spanning basic, translational, and clinical trials research, and giving patients access to studies available almost nowhere else in the region.
