Background

The Labor and Delivery unit involves close teamwork between nurses and physicians. Mutual respect and professionalism are essential to providing safe, high-quality patient care. This study will evaluate if a module that educates nurses and physicians on professional backgrounds and responsibilities will improve perceptions of mutual trust and confidence in judgement and professionalism between groups.

Methods

We will create two parallel modules that provide education on background and responsibilities of nurses and residents on Labor and Delivery. One will be designed about residents for nurses, and the other about nurses for residents. There will be a pre and post survey to assess attitudes and perceptions amongst professional groups. Surveys will involve Likert-scale and multiple choice questions.

Results / Conclusion

The modules and surveys are currently being created.

The ultimate goal of this project is to improve teamwork and respect on the Labor and Delivery unit. The surveys will assess whether our intervention improves perceptions of respect, clinical knowledge/judgement, and understanding of roles and responsibilities amongst residents and nurses.
