University of Oklahoma Hematology Fellowship – Classical, Malignant, Transplant & Cellular Therapy Track

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) offers a unique three-year hematology fellowship track that provides comprehensive training across classical (benign) hematology, malignant hematology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. This track is modeled on the American Society of Hematology’s Hematology-Focused Fellowship Training Program (HFFTP), and is designed to develop future leaders in academic and clinical hematology through structured clinical training, subspecialty integration, and mentored research.

During the first two years, fellows rotate through dedicated inpatient and outpatient services in both classical and malignant hematology. Emphasis is placed on rigorous training in the evaluation and management of cytopenias, coagulopathies, thrombosis, and inherited disorders such as hemophilia and sickle cell disease. Fellows gain exposure to multidisciplinary electives such as women’s health, transfusion medicine, and hemostasis/thrombosis, with protected time to explore research interests early in training.

A core strength of this track is OUHSC’s international leadership in platelet biology and education, anchored by the work of Dr. James N. George—ASH Past President and recipient of the Wallace H. Coulter Award. Fellows benefit from access to decades of expertise in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and drug-induced thrombocytopenia, as well as robust patient registries and the internationally recognized "Platelets on the Web" educational platform.

Fellows also receive in-depth training in hemophilia gene therapy, transplantation and cellular therapy. OU Health’s Stephenson Cancer Center is home to a high-volume bone marrow transplant program and was among the first in the nation to implement an outpatient CAR-T therapy model. Fellows train in both inpatient and outpatient cellular therapy administration, toxicity management, and multidisciplinary coordination. Upon completion of the track, graduates will be fully qualified to practice as transplant physicians.

The third year is dedicated entirely to mentored scholarly activity, during which fellows pursue in-depth research projects with opportunities for national presentation and publication. Fellows may also benefit from the program’s collaboration with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), a nationally recognized research institute where the thrombomodulin/Protein C pathway was elucidated and P-selectin targeting strategies were developed—ultimately leading to the approval of crizanlizumab for sickle cell disease.

With an academic structure aligned with ASH guidelines and an emphasis on excellence in both classical and malignant hematology, this track offers a rich, multidimensional training experience. Graduates will be well-prepared for careers in academic medicine, clinical leadership, or subspecialized hematology practice with a strong foundation in transplant and cellular therapy.
