Multiple Sclerosis & Neuroimmunology

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) that leads to long-term disability. MS can occur in individuals across all age groups, from pediatric patients to the elderly, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Over recent years, the landscape of MS treatment has dramatically improved. With over 20 different disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) now available, patients can experience more favorable long-term outcomes. However, while MS is the most prevalent neuroimmunological disorder, it is not alone. Other rare and complex conditions, such as Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein-Associated Disease (MOGAD), Neurosarcoidosis, and autoimmune encephalitis, also affect the CNS, though they are less commonly diagnosed.

At the OU Neuroimmunology/Multiple Sclerosis Center, our mission is to provide exceptional, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary care for individuals living with both common and rare neuroimmunological disorders. We recognize the importance of a patient-centered approach to treatment, which allows us to tailor therapies to the unique needs of each patient. Whether the disorder is MS, NMO, MOGAD, or another condition, we are committed to a holistic treatment model that addresses not only the physical aspects of the disease but also the emotional, social, and psychological challenges that patients face.

Our specialized team at OU Health is led by experts who are dedicated to providing the best possible care. This team includes:

  • Dr. Anadani and Dr. Arvas, both of whom are trained in MS and Neuroimmunology. They lead patient evaluations, diagnosis, and management plans, working closely with each patient to monitor their progress and adjust treatments as necessary. They provide care to both adult and pediatric MS patients.
  • Michelle Pope, APRN, an advanced practice registered nurse who offers direct care and ongoing assessment of patients, ensuring they are fully supported throughout their treatment journey.

We collaborate with specialists across other disciplines like neuropsychology, urology, neuro-ophthalmology, speech therapy, physical therapy, and dietary services, ensuring comprehensive care. Additionally, our specialty pharmacist, Dr. Clark, Pharm.D., and pharmacy liaison help educate and support patients in managing disease-modifying therapies (DMTs).Our Infusion Center offers biologic medications for patients requiring infusion treatments. We’ve also added a social worker to our team to provide emotional support and connect patients with resources and services.

At the heart of our center's mission is the advancement of clinical research. We are actively working to expand our research program, seeking to better understand the underlying mechanisms of MS and other neuroimmunological disorders. Our goal is to discover new, more effective treatments and ultimately improve the quality of life for our patients. By staying at the forefront of research and innovation, we hope to offer new therapeutic options and enhance long-term outcomes for individuals living with these challenging conditions.
