OU Diversity Scholar Visiting Medical Student Elective

As a joint venture between the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement and the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center Department of Dermatology, we are pleased to offer the Diversity Scholar Visiting Medical Student Elective. This elective is seeking applicants who come from an underrepresented-in-medicine background and have demonstrated vision and commitment to improving the health status of diverse patient populations. Students must display genuine interest in exploring issues of social determinants of health, population medicine, access to care, and social justice as it relates to dermatology. We seek to increase diversity and cultural competency in the healthcare workforce and to promote interest in academic medicine.

"My month-long experience with OU Dermatology solidified my goal to increase diversity within the field    of      dermatology. As a medical student of color, I believe it is important for dermatologists to be well-versed in      assessing and treating skin of color conditions."

  - Sherifat Ademola, MS4, 2021 Diversity Scholar

"As I acclimated to the program, I was elated to see a wide diversity of patient presentations. These patients      allowed me to become more comfortable with complex medical histories. During my rotation, I gained many    important skills including how to complete a full-body skin exam, competency with a dermatoscope, and         notably how to perform skin biopsies."

  - Mia Broughton, MS4, 2021 Diversity Scholar

"During my time at OU for the diversity scholar student elective, I rotated through a variety of clinics and worked    with multiple residents and faculty members. I was able to see patients, expand my dermatology knowledge and    skills, and build mentorships. I am very thankful to Dr. Allen and the other faculty who made me feel supported    and excited for a future in dermatology."
