OU Diversity Scholar Visiting Medical Student Elective

diversity photo

As a joint venture between the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement and the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center Department of Dermatology, we are pleased to offer the Diversity Scholar Visiting Medical Student Elective. This elective is seeking applicants who come from an underrepresented-in-medicine background and have demonstrated vision and commitment to improving the health status of diverse patient populations. Students must display genuine interest in exploring issues of social determinants of health, population medicine, access to care, and social justice as it relates to dermatology. We seek to increase diversity and cultural competency in the healthcare workforce and to promote interest in academic medicine.

"It was an amazing experience rotating with the OU Dermatology Team and I am grateful for such a warm welcome. This rotation helped to highlight the many dermatologic needs of patients of skin of color, and I hope to emulate one day the exemplary medical care that I observed from both faculty and residents. In addition to the excellent mentorship of Dr. Allen and Dr. Levin, it was a joy to increase my clinical dermatologic skills and knowledge in a supportive environment. I am so grateful to have been awarded the OU Dermatology Diversity Elective Scholarship and thank the OU Dermatology Team for making this memorable experience possible."

- Daniel Eli Luna, MS4, 2022 Diversity Scholar

"I truly enjoyed my away rotation with the OU dermatology team. During my month-long experience, I was able to rotate through the various clinics such as complex dermatology and cosmetics. All the residents and faculty were so gracious and provided invaluable teaching throughout the day. This rotation expanded my dermatology knowledge and clinical skills set. I am grateful that I was awarded the Diversity Elective Scholarship and I am especially thankful to Dr. Allen and Dr. Levin for their amazing mentorship."
