Welcome to the University of Oklahoma Department of Surgery. The primary objective of our education and training programs is to teach and prepare motivated learners who are committed to practicing the highest quality surgical procedures at every level of care.
The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine is built on a history of stability. We are proud to call many of the nation’s most knowledgeable and experienced surgical experts our faculty and staff – most of whom were drawn to our program because it is one of the most challenging and who have stayed to build long-term careers because they continue to find it extremely rewarding.

Visiting Medical Students
The University of Oklahoma, Department of Surgery welcomes motivated fourth-year medical students from ACGME-accredited domestic medical schools for a visiting clerkship. A variety of externships exist in surgical subspecialties as availability allows.
To apply, submit an application with your electives preferences to the AAMC Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS). Please note that depending on demand, not all applicants may be accommodated. For further details, email Raven Nelson or call 405-271-5922 ext. 42471.
Application Process
Surgery residency program candidates are selected based on medical school grades, USMLE board scores, letters of recommendation, and interviews. After all information available about each candidate is reviewed by each member of the faculty, a ranking is given. These rankings are consolidated to produce the final matching list.
All first-year appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP Code 158819). Our goal is to select individuals who are intellectually competent, highly motivated, committed, and who possess the characteristics and interpersonal skills that suggest they will become capable and humane surgeons.
Official USMLE transcripts must be included. You will need to request them from NBME and have them mailed electronically to us through ERAS. Applications are not considered until they are complete. Please submit your application and all supporting documents electronically through ERAS no later than Dec. 1 and include an email address with your application.
If you have questions or comments, please call 405-271-6308 or contact the Education Coordinator, Berta Orta.
Candidates for house staff positions in surgery are interviewed on several designated days each year.
Candidates will be selected for interviews based on review of their application form. Interview sessions consist of an opening session to review the training program in general terms, followed by interviews by at least two faculty members. Our interview process does not include formal “testing.” After all interviews are complete, our program will host 1-2 Second Look events.
