The Department is dedicated to educating the next generation of scientists. PhD students and postdoctoral fellows train across more than 40 laboratories engaged in cutting-edge biomedical research spanning both the OUHC and OMRF campuses. We are living in a time of remarkable change and opportunity in research. Training in Cell Biology emphasizes the use of advanced tools and interdisciplinary approaches to study fundamental cellular processes, uncover the molecular and cellular bases of human disease, identify new therapeutic targets, and drive the development of innovative treatments.
As the pace of discovery accelerates, scientists must be adaptable, versatile, and capable of integrating information across diverse scientific fields. To support this, students are trained in a wide range of analytical methods and experimental approaches, including genomics, proteomics, advanced cellular and super-resolution imaging, and model organism genetics. Together, these approaches enable researchers to elucidate how cell biological processes are interconnected and how signaling pathways are coordinated and regulated within the cell, providing deeper insight into complex biological systems. Equally important, successful scientists must be effective communicators. The program emphasizes the ability to present scientific findings clearly in both written and oral formats and to develop strong grant-writing skills. In addition, scientists must be able to communicate their work to the public in an accessible and meaningful way. The Department provides numerous opportunities to develop these skills through seminars, journal clubs, and the Graduate Student Retreat, fostering regular interaction between students and faculty. We focus on preparing students as they look toward a variety of career paths in academia, industry, and beyond, ensuring that they graduate as well-rounded scientists ready to contribute to the future of biomedical research.
