Medical Education
Department of Cell Biology faculty make a significant contribution to the MD curriculum at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Our anatomy faculty Drs. Kris Miller, Mary Moon, and Grant Boxey teach anatomy, histology, and neuroanatomy to medical students and physician associate students at all levels of training, from first year through residency. They are assisted in this instruction by other Cell Biology faculty, including Dr. Jody Summers and Dr. Mohi Ahmad.
Professional Education Outside the College of Medicine
Department of Cell Biology faculty also lead professional education courses outside the OU College of Medicine. Drs. Grant Boxey and Jody Summers lead the histology course for Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students in the College of Dentistry, while Drs. Moon and Miller lead the anatomy course for DDS students. Dr. Mohi Ahmad leads the pharmacology course for students in the College of Allied Health, assisted by other departmental faculty.
Other Educational Initiatives
Department of Cell Biology faculty are committed to ensuring our students have all the training needed to be successful scientists, even outside the classroom.
Omics for the Biomedical Researcher
In partnership with faculty from other departments, Cell Biology faculty member Dr. Lindsay Hayes co-leads a multi-day workshop designed to give students intensive, hands-on coding training to analyze single-cell RNAseq data and other large datasets.
Advanced Microscopy
Cell Biology faculty members Drs. Yiyang Gong and Tomoharu Kanie have partnered to develop a hands-on microscopy course designed to give students formal training in super-resolution microscopy and in developing code to analyze the resulting data.
Grant Writing for Trainees
Dr. Julie Van de Weghe, along with other Cell Biology faculty, has developed a multi-week grant writing workshop to help PhD students and postdocs write competitive fellowship applications.
Mock Study Section for Faculty
To help new and existing faculty improve their grant writing skills, Dr. Yiyang Gong organizes a mock study section three times per year, in line with NIH submission cycles. Faculty receive formal feedback on their grants and gain firsthand experience sitting in on a mock study section.
Annual Cell Biology Retreat and Workshop
Every year, a team of Cell Biology PhD students and faculty organize the Cell Biology Retreat and Workshop. This event draws students from a multi-state area to present research, gives PhD students an opportunity to build organizing skills, brings in an outside faculty speaker, recruits promising undergraduates, and includes career development sessions.
