Dr. Lauren Evans is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and the founding Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. An Oklahoma native and OU College of Medicine graduate, she returned to Oklahoma in 2026 with the opportunity to build a residency program at the institution where her own medical career began. For Dr. Evans, establishing an emergency medicine residency at OU has been a longtime dream, shaped in part by her experiences as a medical student and her desire to create more opportunities for mentorship, advising, and career development for future generations of emergency physicians.
After graduating from OU, Dr. Evans completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), where she subsequently joined the faculty and built a career in medical education and academic leadership. Before returning to Oklahoma, she served as the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at UAMS. Her previous roles included Assistant Residency Program Director, Emergency Medicine Clerkship Director, and faculty advisor for the Emergency Medicine Interest Group. During her time as an EMIG advisor, the organization was nationally recognized as the EMRA Emergency Medicine Interest Group of the Year.
Throughout her career, Dr. Evans has remained involved in emergency medicine education and leadership at the national level. She serves on the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Program Committee and Education Committee, including a leadership role as an objective co-lead. She previously served on the SAEM Medical Student Task Force and the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD) Advising Students Committee. She has presented nationally at SAEM, CORD, and the EMRA Medical Student Forum on topics related to medical education, residency leadership, feedback, and professional development. She is also a graduate of the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM) Faculty Incubator program.
Dr. Evans has also been active in organized emergency medicine, previously serving in several leadership roles within the Arkansas Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, including Chapter President from 2022 to 2024. She is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP).
Her academic interests include undergraduate and graduate medical education, residency leadership, mentorship, curriculum development, and faculty development. Her educational scholarship has focused on resident scholarly activity, feedback, educational innovation, and the learning environment, with work published and presented nationally. What she enjoys most about academic medicine is the opportunity to mentor learners over time. She particularly values getting to know students and residents as individuals, helping them explore their interests, and watching their confidence and abilities grow as they find their own paths in medicine.
Dr. Evans is particularly excited about the opportunity to build a residency program from the ground up alongside a group of faculty who share her enthusiasm for medical education. She believes OU has tremendous potential to create something special, combining the resources and clinical experiences of a major academic medical center with the opportunity to be creative and intentional in developing a new program. She hopes to build a residency that continues to grow and evolve, embraces new ideas, and prepares physicians for the changing landscape of emergency medicine. Above all, she wants to create a program that its residents and faculty are proud to be part of and that makes a lasting contribution to emergency medicine at OU and beyond.
