Gregory L Skuta, MD

Dr. Gregory L. Skuta is the David W. Parke II, MD Professor, Regents’ Professor, and Vice Chair for Faculty Development and External Relations at the OU Health Dean McGee Eye Institute (DMEI) and in the University of Oklahoma (OU) College of Medicine’s Dean McGee Department of Ophthalmology. He served as DMEI’s President and Chief Executive Officer and the Edward L. Gaylord Professor and Chair of the OU Department of Ophthalmology from 2009 to 2021.

A native of Illinois, Dr. Skuta received his undergraduate (Phi Beta Kappa) and medical (Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society) degrees from the University of Illinois. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was chief resident, and a glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He also served on the faculty at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center from 1987 to 1992 before joining DMEI/OU in July 1992.

A contributor to more than 120 publications and a lecturer at more than 250 meetings throughout the world, Dr. Skuta completed a six-year term as Chair of the Foundation Advisory Board for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO’s) Foundation in 2024 and served as the Academy’s President in 2014. He also serves as Executive Vice President of the American Glaucoma Society (AGS) and on the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (for which he chairs the Nominating Committee and is on the Underwriting Committee and Risk Management Committee) and of the Alliance for Vision Research, for which he is Vice President.

In addition, Dr. Skuta has served as President of the AGS and American Eye Study Club; as a Director and Chair of the Written Examinations Committee for the American Board of Ophthalmology; on the Board of Governors of the World Glaucoma Association; on the editorial board for the Journal of Glaucoma and EyeNet Magazine; as a Director-at-Large for the Oklahoma Academy of Ophthalmology (OAO); and as an investigator for National Eye Institute-sponsored clinical trials. He is an active member of the American Ophthalmological Society and Glaucoma Research Society.

Dr. Skuta’s honors and awards include President of the University of Illinois Varsity Men’s Glee Club, the AAO’s Life Achievement Honor Award and Guest of Honor recognition, the AGS President’s Award, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Medical Service from the OU College of Medicine Alumni Association, the OAO’s Distinguished Service Award, and induction into the Tuscola (Illinois) Community High School Hall of Fame. He is or has been listed among the Best Doctors in America, Castle Connolly Top Doctors, Top Doctors of the 405 (Legacy Honoree in 2025), and The Journal Record’s “Health Care Heroes,” as well as Marquis’ Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.

Greg and Anne, his wife of 42 years who retired in 2021 as a Director in the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, have three grown children, two children-in-law, and three grandchildren. They are active members of St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.

Greg’s outside interests include music, travel, American Presidential history, and cinema.
